The New E50-S

We called the original E50 our masterpiece, as it represented the peak of our capabilities in terms of sound, craftsmanship, and design. Over the last few years, we have been very honored to learn that our customers and reviewers agree that the E50 truly is something special, despite taking a different design approach from everything we had made before.

But the world never stops spinning, and the continued amazing feedback from those using the E50, combined with our own experiences and new engineering ideas, made us consider how we could make another meaningful addition to the E50 lineup.

From the beginning, we knew that the E50 had some areas where it would not suit every customer's needs in terms of equipment and tonal preferences. After a long period of building, listening, and testing, we are finally ready to officially release the new E50-S.

It is not an upgrade over the E50, but rather a different approach to the E50, retaining its core DNA while making the E Series suitable for a wider range of customers.

So, what is the difference between the E50 and the new E50-S?

The new S version, with the “S” standing for “Sensitivity,” is a bit bigger than the regular E50, as the width has increased by 1 cm / 0.4” to accommodate the now larger woofer. This woofer is a custom-made Satori 7.5” woofer using the well-renowned TeXtreme® cone material, made by Oxeon AB in Sweden.

Beside the new woofer, it also have an slightly different tweeter and a very unique resistor free crossover.

What does this new design sound like compared with the regular E50?

You get less overall bass, but more focus on the midrange, which enhances vocals, provides a very textured sound, and generally allows the midrange to take a more prominent position in the mix.

The treble is still airy and highly detailed, yet smooth and non-fatiguing. Treble performance has been one of the most praised aspects of the E50, so the E50-S follows the same overall tuning here.

The already very deep and focused soundstage of the E50 is now even more detailed, clear, and engaging on the E50-S. It is more forward and provides an incredible sense of “air” around each instrument in the soundstage, with a clear focus on bringing voices closer to you.

The E50-S is more energetic, holographic, and snappy in its presentation, revealing an ocean of detail and razor-sharp imaging without becoming analytical or cold. In contrast, the E50 is more relaxed and laid-back in its soundstage, where everything takes on that easy, pleasing “paper-cone” sound character.

No speaker excels in all areas; designing speakers is always a game of picking and choosing your priorities, and that is exactly why both of these speakers can exist side by side.

Use Cases

The E50-S should be considered if you want a less bass-heavy version of the E50. This can make sense if you listen in a smaller room, need the speakers closer to walls, have issues with boomy bass, or simply prefer a sound with less focus on the bass and more emphasis on midrange detail and clarity.

Another reason to choose the E50-S over the E50 is if you are using a less powerful amplifier. The E50-S can be used with anything from small 15-watt tube amplifiers and up, while still providing respectable output levels. Here the E50 is a hungry speaker! it would first show its full output cablebilties with a very strong and powerful amplifier.

It is not a question of which of the two is better; it is very much a matter of personal preference. If you care about objective data, the E50 is the more frequency-linear speaker of the two, but neither compares with the S400 in this regard.

Finally tuned by ear.

The E Series basics are objectively designed, but it is ultimately tuned by ear. Both models feature a version of the BBC dip. The E50-S has a more pronounced BBC dip, as well as a slightly lighter bass response. The modified version of the BBC dip ensures that both speakers are easy to listen to and do not become fatiguing over time.

We have chosen not to publish measurements of the E50-S, which we did on the E50, as we have seen how measurements can “color” people’s opinions beforehand. During development, when we A/B test the E50-S against all of our other speakers, the measurements were frankly quite shocking to see, as the sound we heard did not correlate at all with what you would expect when looking at the graphs!

Just trust us: if you want a frequency-linear speaker, this is NOT what you are looking for!

People who know Buchardt Audio also know that we are capable of creating objectively near-perfect designs. Heck, the original S400 was the first commercially available speaker designed using the Klippel NFS.

That is exactly why the release of the original E50 was such a daunting step for us. We had built a speaker that we genuinely believed sounded better, despite the objective data telling us otherwise. For a company with such a strong engineering background, trusting our ears over the measurements was honestly a little scary. But looking at the incredible feedback the E50 received, along with the extremely low return rate, we have learned something important along the way:
sometimes trusting our gut might not be such a bad thing after all. If you want to read more about the development process of the E50, then check out the dropdowns below.

Does this mean this is how we will engineer all our speakers in the future? NO. The design process of the E Series is significantly more demanding and time-consuming, and it is a different approach that will not match everyone's taste. To design a speaker that have its own soul / character might not be for everyone. Many would prefer the speakers to be a transport device of the signal, that would color the signal as little as possible. We believe there is space for both options, and is why we offer both.

Why is it more expensive than the original E50?

Many who know these parts might glance at the woofers and think the original E50 should be the more expensive model due to the higher DIY price of the PURIFI driver. However, when buying in the large volumes we do, pricing changes significantly, and our cost for these two woofers is actually about the same. What makes the E50-S more expensive is its more advanced and costly crossover. The PURIFI woofer allowed us to use just a single crossover component on the original E50. Working with harder cone materials, like the one used in the E50-S, naturally results in more cone breakup, so a first-order crossover design simply wasn't an option.
